It was that time of year again when Nigel Smith Director from A E Thomson Ltd had the annual Sportsman Dinner he arranges for local grassroots football and a selected charity. This is the 4th Dinner that Nigel has raised with a total now of over £45,000 that has been used for a number of charities and grassroots football development.
This has helped many charities which have included Prostate Cancer UK Ltd, East Anglian Childrens Hospice (Each), East Anglian Air Ambulance and this year Make A Wish. This years guest speakers was former England and Arsenal legend Ray Parlour and former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Wales striker Dean Saunders. The format of the event was again a 3 course meal along with a raffle and auction that was as always well supported by the audience. This event has now become a fixture in the diaries of many with a large percentage of guests supported every dinner so far.
Nigel was once again overwhelmed by the support the event receives and cannot thank enough the supporters on the evening as well as all those behind the scenes that make this happen along with many local businesses who have continued with their support in either supplying prizes or sponsorship. “It is just so rewarding when you see the work this charity gets involved in and really see the difference it can make. This event also helps local grassroots football clubs in Witchford Colts and Ely City, which continue to provide facilities for boys and girls from 4 -18 the ability to develop both their footballing skills as well as social skills and teamwork”.
Shaun Campbell, from Make-A-Wish UK, said: “A special thank you to everyone involved for your support, the money raised will change more lives for the better.”
The plans are already in place for 2020 so watch this space.
